As our first film “Misfit Heights” approaches completion, we’ve started pre-production on our next project “Space Ale”. An out of work home brewer unknowingly teleports himself, his girlfriend, and his beer into the middle of an intergalactic space war. And it’s the man with a six pack that saves the day.

Check out the website at www.spaceale.com and watch the teaser.

I think it’s going to be a fun project and can’t wait to start filming. We are going to be limited on time and hopefully can film everything in two weeks. This makes the planning and scheduling very crucial in getting all 14 episodes filmed. Luckily, most of them take place in one location but I would kind of like to have my apartment back quickly after the production phase is finished.

A while back I turned on all the lights in our apartment and recorded some footage with my HVX200. I know the camera has problems dealing with low light, but it made me consider getting a light kit if I want my short videos to look a bit more professional. I started looking around and researching what kind of lights to buy. Now I like Arri, but a light kit can cost anywhere from $2,500 and up. This was way out of my price range so I thought for a bit and decided that I need to start working with what I got. And sometimes, what I can afford. I traveled to Home Depot and bought four work lights. Two 500w lights and two 300w lights. They were pretty cheap and having some lights does make a difference in the final outcome of your video. However, I still wanted something a little more professional so I bought a few extra parts. Some elbow brackets, bolts, and a flat piece of galvanized steel.

I took the piece of galvanized steel and cut it out into two different sizes of triangle shapes. Bent the corners around so they wouldn’t cut anyone and attached them to the lights using the bolts and elbow brackets. Hazah! My lights have barn doors. Then using some flat black grill paint, I painted the barn doors and light faces. This made it look a little cleaner. Since I was going to remove the glass in the light I thought I would try a test. I sandblasted the glass in the light to try and use it as a diffuser. It worked really well until the glass suddenly shattered all over our living room floor. Apparently sandblasting the glass made it structurally weak and it wasn’t able to stand up to the heat of the work light. So the test failed and I removed the glass from the rest of the work lights. I then created a stand holder using a bolt and a 3/8″ conduit cap. I could set my new lights onto a light stand and then screw it tight.

I’ve tried the lights in a few shoots and I can say they’ve made a big difference. I still don’t have as much control as a professional lighting kit, but I have to work with what I got. And these lights cost me less than $150. Check out the videos they were used in.

I’ve started early on my New Years resolution and started writing a few scripts. The more I think about them and plan them, the more excited I get about working on them. But right now, what I’m really testing is my blog and it’s interaction with WordPress and Facebook. So please bear with me as I get things set up, and then I will start posting more fun or informative blogs and videos. Like a video blog about how I created my own film lights or a short silent film. So please stay tuned.
